Lawmaker Helps Launch Air Force Starbase La Luz Academy
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today helped launch a new educational program, the Air Force Starbase La Luz Academy at Kirtland Air Force Base. Today’s grand opening also kicked off Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Week.
“Kids get excited by math and science when it’s hands-on and fun,” Wilson said. “This facility will be put to good use helping students know they can excel in these important subjects.”
Housed on the base in the program’s own building, the Academy is open to elementary and secondary students. Sponsored by Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), students will be mentored in math and science studies by scientists, engineers and researchers working at the Phillips Research site. The program is part of a national outreach effort that began in 1989 and works with local schools in the community to enhance math and science learning opportunities. This is the first Starbase academy built at an active-duty Air Force base.
“New Mexico’s future is as bright as the education we provide today to our children,” Wilson said. “That’s why I’m proud that in the five years from 1998 to 2003 the federal commitment to good schools in New Mexico has nearly doubled from $288 million to $494 million. I’ll continue working for improved teacher training, high expectations and hands-on student learning opportunities.”
Wilson has a track record of supporting hands-on learning efforts, from outdoor classrooms to active art and music programs in every school. Other educational priorities she has worked for include more teacher training, early reading skill development in children and a solid foundation in basics like math and science.
