FACT SHEET
WHAT?
An Artistic Discovery is the annual Congressional High School Art Competition and national exhibition of winning art from Congressional Districts across the United States. Students from New Mexico’s First Congressional District have proudly participated for the last eight years.
Best of Show artwork from each Congressional District is displayed in Washington, D.C.
WHY?
An Artistic Discovery provides an opportunity to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of young New Mexicans.
WHEN & HOW?
Artwork entries will be accepted Thursday and Friday, April 26 & 27 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Congressional office-625 Silver Ave SW, Suite 340 (on Silver between 6th & 7th Streets). The artwork will be on display at Winrock Mall, May 4-22. The Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held Monday, May 14, 6:00-7:00 pm at Winrock Mall. Entries must meet the guidelines outlined on this page.
GUIDELINES
The Competition is open to high school students from the First Congressional District only.
The artwork must be ready to hang (hooks, wire, adhesive hanger, etc). The artwork is required to be two-dimensional, no larger than 32 inches by 32 inches, including the frame, and no more than 4 inches in depth. Framing is not required for the competition in New Mexico.
Artwork in the following categories will be accepted:
Paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.)
Drawings (pastels, colored pencils, pencils, charcoal, ink, markers, etc.)
Collage
Prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints)
Mixed Media
Computer graphics
Photography
Entries must be original concept, design & execution and may not violate U.S. Copyright Laws.
Student Information/Release Form must be signed by the teacher, student and parent/guardian to certify originality of the art piece. Student’s name, address, and phone number must be on the back of the art.
Final decision regarding suitability for the exhibition in the Capitol is left to the final discretion of a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol. |
