Wilson Helps Block Democrat Effort to Make Troop Funding Conditional on Withdrawal May 15, 2008

"Slow Bleed" Blocked in House

Washington, D.C. – House Republicans exposed and stopped the efforts of the House Democrat leadership to make funding of the troops conditional on their immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) joined 132 of her Republican colleagues who voted “present” when Democrats offered an amendment to add supplemental spending for the troops to a bill that requires they withdraw from Iraq in 30 days. The Democrat amendment failed 141 to 149 with 132 voting present.

“We should not make funding for the troops conditional on their withdrawal,” Wilson said. “Nancy Pelosi tried to force the military and those like me to go along with her ‘slow bleed’ strategy. I wouldn't go along with it and we stopped her.”

“It’s time for Democrats to do the right thing and join Republicans in passing a clean troop funding bill that supports our troops.”
