Wilson Encourages Teens to Participate in Congressional Art Competition February 09, 2004

ALBUQUERQUE - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today encouraged Moriarty High School students to participate in this year’s Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery 2004.

High school students throughout the First Congressional District have an opportunity to submit their works of art for national recognition in this 23rd annual competition.

“This is a great opportunity for New Mexico’s youth to show off their talents. We hope that the competition will open a window for aspiring artists,” Wilson said.

Mary Ann Weems is serving as the Chairperson for the competition. A panel of judges will select Best of Show as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and other award winning pieces. The New Mexico entry judged Best of Show will be displayed in a corridor leading from Wilson’s House office to the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. First, second, and third place will be displayed in Wilson’s Albuquerque office. The winning artist will receive three tickets—donated by Southwest Airlines—to fly to the nation’s capitol for a reception and the unveiling of student artwork from throughout the nation.

Entries will be accepted Thursday and Friday, March 11 and 12, from 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. at the Congressional office - 20 First Plaza, NW, Suite 603 (Copper and 2nd/3rd streets). The artwork will be on display March 17-31. The Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held Monday, March 22, in the early evening. The time and place will be announced at a later date.

For more information, including guidelines for the competition, call Congresswoman Wilson’s office at 346-6781 or check “Hot Topics” on her Web site www.house.gov/wilson.
