A True American Hero February 21, 2007

Dear Friends,

The House of Representatives is a reflection of America, with all its greatness and its faults. Four hundred thirty-five people, most of whom would not be recognized outside of their home states.

One of the men I admire in the House is someone probably few New Mexicans have heard of. His name is Sam Johnson and he`s from Texas. He doesn`t run to the floor and talk a lot. In fact he doesn`t run anywhere at all. He limps and walks with a cane that he holds in his crippled hand. Both are a consequence of spending nearly seven years in the hands of the North Vietnamese as a prisoner of war.

The founders of this republic, when they signed the Declaration of Independence, pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Many of them lost their families, their homes and their fortunes to establish this great country. None of them ever disavowed signing the document. They kept their honor.

Not much is asked of most of us as Americans these days for the privilege of living in this republic. In modern times, it is unusual to know a man who has endured so much for this country.

Below, you`ll find Sam Johnson`s closing speech on the floor of the House last week. You should watch it. With your kids.

Wish you were here,
