Wilson Announces Expanded Chiropractic Care for NM Seniors November 10, 2004

New Mexico Chosen for Medicare Chiropractic Project
Albuquerque – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that Medicare is expanding chiropractic services to New Mexico seniors as part of a demonstration project. The Department of Health and Human Services today confirmed that New Mexico will be one of just four states included in the project, which will be statewide in New Mexico and Maine, and available in some areas in Virginia and Illinois. “This project takes an important look at preventative health services, and seniors here in New Mexico will be the first to benefit over the next two years with more coverage,” Wilson said. The New Mexico Congressional delegation had urged that New Mexico be chosen for the expanded service project because of the state’s health professional shortages. The project expands coverage for chiropractic services, with the goal of evaluating the possibility of covering more chiropractic services under Medicare nationally, according to the Health and Human Services Department. Under the change, in April 2005, chiropractors in New Mexico will be able to provide the complete range of chiropractic services to any beneficiary enrolled under Medicare Part B, including diagnostic services, x-rays and therapy. Currently, Medicare coverage for chiropractic care does not include prevention or health maintenance. The two-year demonstration project is required by the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act signed into law in November of 2003.
