New Mexico Lawmaker lauded for her on-line communications, including electronic correspondence
WASHINGTON, DC- Congresswoman Heather Wilson was recently identified nationally as a model for other congressional offices in developing practices for managing constituent e-mail--“practices that meet and often exceed office and constituent expectations." Every month Wilson`s office responds to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of New Mexicans who e-mail her about issues she faces as a federal lawmaker.
Wilson’s Web site, www.house.gov/Wilson, and e-mail operation, ask.heather@mail.house.gov, was identified in a study by the Congress Online Project as a model for other congressional offices developing their own on-line communications. The group is looking at all 535 members of the U.S. House and Senate for their on-going study.
“E-mail and the internet have revolutionized how people get information about the world around them,” says Wilson, a member of the Telecommunications and the Internet subcommittee in the House. “It’s also a great way to stay connected to New Mexicans. Providing excellent service to the people I represent will always be my top priority. I’m happy to know that the work my staff and I do in communicating with New Mexicans electronically is being recognized as a model for other members of the House. The report is the first in a series from the Congress Online Project, a joint research project undertaken by the Congressional Management Foundation and George Washington University, and funded by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts. According to the report, about 90 percent of House and Senate offices continue to answer constituent e-mails with postal "snail" mail, and fail to take advantage of available technologies that could reduce staff workloads and increase the response time to constituents.
However, the report says, Congresswoman Wilson’s office is one of the most advanced when it comes to e-mail and web technology. Wilson’s office responds to most e-mails from constituents via e-mail, and she has one of the most comprehensive Web sites in Congress. Wilson’s Web site, www.house.gov/Wilson, features a weekly E-newsletter that gives New Mexicans the latest information about what’s happening in Congress. The site is bilingual.
