Wilson Introduces NM Aquifer Assessment Act |
April 26, 2007 |
|
Provides Federal Study of NM Water Resources Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced she is introducing the New Mexico Aquifer Assessment Act in the House to provide for a thorough analysis of New Mexico’s water resources.
“This analysis can help our state protect our most precious natural resource – water,” Wilson said. “We need thorough and accurate information to plan for the future.”
“Water is the lifeblood of the West,” Wilson said. “Our state makes important decisions about our water, and we need to get it right.”
The legislation instructs the Department of the Interior, through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to undertake a comprehensive groundwater resources study.
Cooperating with the state of New Mexico, the effort will include surveys of groundwater resources, including a characterization of surface and bedrock geology, and the Salt Basin, Tularosa Basin, and middle Rio Grande Aquifer.
Through the study, we will learn more about the availability of groundwater, its salinity, and how the groundwater and surface water interact.
The last study the USGS completed was in 2001 along the Middle Rio Grande Basin. Based on that study the state had fewer resources than previously thought, consequently they made adjustments where needed.
The New Mexico Aquifer Assessment Act of 2007 will allow water planning managers to make adjustments as they did after the last USGS study. This is companion legislation to the bill introduced by Senators Domenici and Bingaman, and Wilson also introduced it in the House in the 109th Congress.
Last week, Wilson also introduced the New Mexico Water Planning Assistance Act (H.R. 1711) to help the state develop comprehensive plans to manage water resources.
