15 World War II Vets Receive Commemorative “Jubilee Medal of Liberty” August 19, 2000
 
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Congresswoman Heather Wilson honored fifteen World War II veterans who served on French soil during June 6, 1944 through August 31, 1944 with a commemorative “Jubilee Medal of Liberty” during a ceremony at American Legion Post 69 this morning. Included among the fifteen recipients of the medals were three veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart. Private Celso Garcia--Company E 327 th Glider Infantry United States Army, Private 1st Class Pete Jaramillo--Company F 1302nd Engineer Regiment United States Army, and Sergeant William McDonald--1st Infantry Division United States Army are all recipients of the Purple Heart and received a commemorative Jubilee Medal of Liberty at the ceremony this morning. All World War II Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces and participated in the Battle of Normandy on any dates including, June 6 through August 31, 1944 are eligible for the commemorative medal. The following is a list of the 15 veterans who received the commemorative medals at the ceremony: * Howard Ambrose – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Ambrose was a 1st Sergeant with the Headquarters Battery, 414th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion. * Clayton Beck – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Beck was an Officer and an Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Unit Commander. * Celso Garcia – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Garcia was a Private with Company E 327 th Glider Infantry. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. * Quirino Garcia – Member of American Legion Post 69. He was a member of the United States Army. Mr. Garcia was Private 1st Class with the Service Battery 809th Field Artillery Battalion. * Bernard Eisberg – Member of the United States Army and later the United States Air Force. During World War II, he served in with the Headquarters Squadron of the 9th Air Force. * Edward Fjelstad – Accepting on behalf of Mr. Fjelstad is his daughter, Lisa Medina. Mr. Fjelstad was a member of the United States Army as a Private 1st Class Company B, 77th Armored Medical Battalion. * Harold Hartley – Accepting on behalf of Mr. Hartley is his wife, Mrs. Dolores Hartley. Mr. Hartley was an Officer with the United States Army and received a Bronze Star for his service. * Jadin Hoffman – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Hoffman was a Private 1st Class with the 103rd Evacuation Hospital. * Ora Horton – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Horton served his country for 20 years in the Armed Services. During World War II, he served with the 2nd Infantry Division. * Pete Jaramillo – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Jaramillo was a Private 1st Class with Company F 1302nd Engineer Regiment. He received a Purple Heart for his service. * William McDonald – Member of the United States Army. Mr. McDonald was a Sergeant with the 1 st Infantry Division and received a Purple Heart and 6 Bronze Stars for his service. * Benny Sanchez – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Sanchez was a Sergeant with the 561st Bombarment Squadron. * Joe Sedillo – Member of the United States Army. Mr. Sedillo was a Private 1st Class with Battery A of the 62 Field Artillery Battalion. * Stanley Solarz – Member of the United States Navy. He served on the USS McCook which bombarded the beaches and waterfront of Normandy on June 6, 1944. * Ralph Workman – Accepting on his behalf is Evelyn Applequist. Mr. Workman was a Member of the United States Army and was a Private 1st Class with the 41st Armed Infantry Regiment. —30—
