Wilson Votes to Override Veto on Children’s Health Insurance |
October 23, 2007 |
|
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson voted today to override the President’s veto on SCHIP, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Wilson released the following statement:
“While the State Children’s Health Insurance Program will continue under existing law for the time being, the Congress and the President should quickly resolve their outstanding differences and reauthorize this successful program.
“Broader bipartisan support is easily achievable.
“A broadly supported reauthorization would be based on the bill already passed, but would:
• Strengthen the provisions that require states to enroll harder-to-reach low income children before expanding eligibility upward. • Retain the phase-out of adults from the program. • Make some provision for reducing the likelihood that families with private insurance will shift to SCHIP. • Retain the provision that allows states to use funds to cover low income children previously eligible for Medicaid.
“We encourage the House and Senate leadership and the Administration to rapidly resolve these outstanding issues. Relatively minor changes would yield a broad bipartisan coalition to pass the bill.”
