Speech to hundreds of business leaders focuses on growing jobs and economy in NM
Albuquerque, N.M – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today addressed hundreds of business and community leaders at the tenth annual State of the District speech, sponsored by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.
In today’s speech, Wilson noted the importance of making tax relief passed in 2001 and 2003 permanent, passing a housing bill that preserves the American dream of home ownership, and balanced energy policies.
“After enjoying the longest continuous stretch of job growth on record, our national economy is experiencing a slowdown,” Wilson stated today. “The important question for all of us is what we should do – for the short term and the long haul – to make a slow down in our economy short and shallow.”
Wilson believes the rebates soon to be distributed to millions of taxpayers, as well as the already-passed housing reforms, will be a good jump-start for our economy and supports making the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 permanent to ensure long term economic growth. Wilson also explained the Section 179 tax incentives for small businesses. Section 179, named for its place in the tax code, allows businesses to write-off capital expenses. The provisions encourage businesses to invest in equipment, which has a positive effect on the U.S. economy and job creation.
Wilson also addressed the impact that energy has on our economy.
“We need a balanced long-term energy plan to make America more energy independent. A balanced policy includes production, conservation, and research on new technologies.”
“I have always been a strong supporter of renewable sources of energy, including solar, biomass, and wind projects,” Wilson said.
The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce also presented Congresswoman Wilson with the Spirit of Enterprise Award, and thanked her for her support of key business issues in Congress.
