Wilson Encourages High School Artists to Enter Congressional Competition April 06, 2007
 
Submissions Accepted Week of April 16 in Albuquerque


Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson encourages high school students in her district to enter the 2007 Congressional Art Competition.

“This is a great opportunity for New Mexico’s youth to show off their talents. We hope that the competition will open a window for aspiring artists,” Wilson said.

Entries will be accepted Monday through Thursday, April 16-19, 8:00am – 5:00pm at Wilson’s office at 20 First Plaza NW, Suite 603 (Copper & 2nd/3rd Streets).

WHAT IS IT?
An Artistic Discovery is the annual Congressional High School Art Competition and national exhibition of winning art from Congressional Districts across the United States. Students from New Mexico’s First Congressional District have proudly participated for the last eleven years.

Best of Show artwork from each Congressional District is displayed in Washington, D.C.

WHEN & HOW?
Artwork entries will be accepted Monday-Thursday, April 16-19, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Congressional office-20 First Plaza NW, Suite 603 (Copper & 2nd/3rd Streets)

Artwork will be displayed at April 23-May 3 at First Plaza-Galeria Building.

The Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held Friday, April 27 in the early evening at First Plaza-Galeria Building.

A panel of judges will select Best of Show, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and other award winning pieces.

The Best of Show will be sent to Washington, D.C. to be proudly displayed in a corridor that leads from my House Office to the U.S. Capitol.

Entries must meet the guidelines outlined on this page and an entry form must accompany each entry.

AN ARTISTIC DISCOVERY 2007 GUIDELINES
The Competition is open to high school students from the First Congressional District.

The artwork must be ready to hang (hooks, wire, adhesive hanger, etc).

The artwork is required to be two-dimensional, no larger than 30 inches by 30 inches, including the frame, and no more than 4 inches in depth.

Framing is not required, but is encouraged for the local competition. However a secure hanging device must be attached to the artwork for the local competition.

Artwork in the following categories will be accepted:
  • Paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.)

  • Photography

  • Drawings (pastels, colored pencils, pencils, charcoal, ink, markers, etc.)

  • Collage: must be two dimensional -Prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints)

  • Mixed Media

  • Computer graphics

    Entries must be original concept, design & execution and may not violate U.S. Copyright Laws.

    The Student Information and Release Form must be signed by the teacher, student and parent/guardian to certify originality of the art piece. Student’s name, address, and phone number must be on the back of the art.

    A white 3”X2” tag with the student’s name and school name attached to the bottom front right hand corner of the art, unless it will damage the art. In which case the tag must be provided to post at the display.

    Final decision regarding suitability for the exhibition in the Capitol is left to the final discretion of a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol.

    Artists are limited to 3 pieces. The entire competition is limited to 150 pieces.

    Artwork will not be accepted unless these guidelines are met.
