We`re Back! |

Dear Friends,
We`re back!
I flew back to Washington on Monday with the hope of finishing the budget and getting the Medicare Choice fix done for New Mexico this week. But, with the Presidential race still in limbo and President Clinton not in Washington, we passed another "keep the government open" spending bill that will expire December 5th.
We did meet the incoming members of the 107th Congress and we elected the Republican leadership this week. Denny Hastert will continue to be Speaker of the House. Sometimes, I think Denny should be called "Listener" rather than "Speaker" of the House. He really is good at absorbing and reflecting the tides and passions of this body, with all our regional and ideological differences.
While still bird-dogging pieces of this years budget important to New Mexico, we`re beginning to develop our legislative agenda for the 107th Congress. We`re going to strengthen and expand our "GI Bill for Teachers" and re-introduce it, continue to focus on problems of health care for New Mexicans, and try to get our junk e-mail bill through the House and Senate early in the next Congress. I expect to co-sponsor marriage penalty and death tax relief bills again next year.
And, while legislation is important, the real heart of this job is constituent and community service. I think we do that pretty well -- and so do most of the people we serve -- but I always want to get better. So my staff and I will take some time in the coming weeks to see where we can make improvements.
Over the coming weeks I will be reaching out and seeking to reassure people that I represent everyone in our wonderful district. I look forward to seeing you around!
Wish you were here,
Heather |
