Understanding File Formats

PDF Files (Adobe Acrobat Systems)
Adobe® (creator of the PDF) defines PDF as "an acronym for 'Portable Document Format.' PDF is a file format that lets you view and print a file exactly as the author designed it, without needing to have the same application or fonts used to create the file."

Many of the House documents available from the Clerk’s site are in PDF. To view these documents, you will need to use a reader. One of several available, Acrobat Reader®, can be downloaded from the Adobe® Web site. Other readers are available from various shareware Web sites.

.DOC Files (Microsoft)
Files that end with .doc have been created using the Microsoft Word application. Microsoft Word® is a word processing program and a product of the Microsoft Corporation.

.WPD Files (Corel)
Files that end with .wpd have been created using the WordPerfect application. WordPerfect® is a word processing program and a product of the Corel Corporation.

.TXT Files (Text File)
Files that end with .txt have been created using a text editor like Notepad. These files can be opened in any word processing program, like Microsoft Word® or Corel WordPerfect®.
