Wilson Statement on Air Force Academy Report December 08, 2004

Washington – Statement from Congresswoman Heather Wilson on the report of the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General on Sexual Assault at the Air Force Academy.   “The DOD Inspector General briefed members of the House Armed Services Committee last night on its year-long review of sexual assault problems at the Air Force Academy.  His conclusion that the root cause of sexual assault problems at the Academy was ‘the failure of successive chains of command over the last ten years to acknowledge the severity of the problems’ is probably true and very disappointing.   “I am also troubled by his findings that there is a cadet subculture that disregards regulations and the law, including rules about alcohol and consensual sex in the dormitories, and that fosters negative attitudes and actions toward women.  Toleration of such a subculture undermines good order and discipline in any military unit and is far below the standards we expect of officer candidates at our service academies.   “Changing the standards and culture of any military unit is a leadership issue.  As a graduate, and as a member of Congress, we expect this to change.  We will continue to provide the necessary oversight to ensure that it does.”    Wilson is a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Academy class of 1982.  She is the only Air Force Academy graduate and the only woman veteran serving in Congress.
