Resources and Help for Those Suffering From Mental Illness October 12, 2007

NM spends $54 million a year on mental health

New Mexico is home to approximately 370,000 individuals with some form of mental disorder. Of those, 71,000 adults have a serious mental illness, which includes individuals with schizophrenia, manic depression, major depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In addition, there are nearly 19,000 children and adolescents in New Mexico with a severe emotional disturbance.

 Congresswoman Wilson's work on
mental health issues has continued
in Congress through her position on
the Health Subcommittee.

Congresswoman Wilson began her work on mental health issues over a decade ago at the Children, Youth and Families Department. The Department not only had responsibility for all of the foster children in the state, it ran the mental health placement and treatment program for children.

Wilson hopes to erase the stigma attached to mental illness, and encourages sufferers and their friends and families to seek the help they need.

On Thursday, October 11, Wilson led a roundtable discussion with New Mexico mental health professionals and advocates to discuss legislation she’s pushing in Congress to help those with mental illnesses get the treatment they need.

“We owe it to the 370,000 New Mexicans suffering from mental illness to put mental health on the same footing with physical care. We want people to be healthy in body and spirit, and this bill is an important step to equalizing that care.”

Mental Health Links - The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the US Department of Health and Human Services provides a comprehensive list of online resources for nearly every mental illness.

AboutMentalHealth.org - This is an informative blog with factual information about many mental disorders.
