Wilson Supports Bioshield Measures July 15, 2004

Bill Improves Counter-Terrorism Preparations Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson supported legislation that would improve our nation’s response against bioterrorism. Project Bioshield (S. 15) was passed 414-2 late yesterday, and will support counter-terrorism efforts by authorizing $5.5 billion for fiscal years 2004-2013 to fund research and development of vaccines and treatments. “The anthrax attack through the mail in 2001 was a wake-up call,” Wilson said. “We’ve passed laws to strengthen our public health system so that our food, water and air are safer. This is another important investment in our safety and future.” Project BioShield funds the development and research necessary to develop crucial countermeasures, such as vaccines and treatments. Without federal support, there is little economic incentive for the private sector to develop these countermeasures, because these diseases are rare. The anthrax mailings of 2001 took five lives, and required treatment for thousands. But successful medical treatment was available. This bill works to ensure that such treatments are available in case of the spread of other threats such as botulism, smallpox and plague.
