Wilson focuses on Friendly Skies November 16, 2001

Airport security bill flies through U.S. House 410-9
WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today cast a vote for safety by supporting the airline security agreement reached yesterday between House and Senate negotiators. The Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001 passed the U.S. House overwhelmingly with a vote of 410-9. “I think this is a good, strong bill that will help make flying safer. Our goal has been to get a bill that sets tough, enforceable federal rules and that provides the means to enforce those rules,” said Congresswoman Wilson. “I’m glad we were able to get a solid piece of legislation to the President before Americans join our families for the holiday. The friendly skies need to stay that way.” House provisions included in the final legislation include:
  • All checked baggage must be screened.
  • Baggage screeners must be U.S. citizens.
  • The agreement will limit passenger fees by capping the fee to $2.50 and limiting the number of times passengers can be charged when traveling to two for a maximum fee of $5.00 per trip.
  • The legislation will use a pilot program at five airports to test the performance of federal employees versus private employees with federal oversights.
  • Airport security will be overseen by the Department of Transportation, rather than the Department of Justice. The Transportation Security Administration has been set up in the DOT for this purpose.
