Wilson Hails Approval of Cerro Grande Fire Relief Package June 28, 2000

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson hailed the House/Senate Conference Committee’s approval of the Cerro Grande fire relief package earlier this evening. Senate and House appropriators agreed to provide the $661 million for New Mexico as part of an emergency supplemental funding package that the House will vote on tomorrow as part of the FY2001 Military Construction Appropriations Bill. Once the Senate passes the bill it will be sent to the White House to be signed into law. “This is great news for the victims of the Cerro Grande fire in Northern New Mexico,” said Wilson. “I am grateful for all the hard work of Senator Domenici, Senator Bingaman and the leadership in the House to help get this relief passed as quickly as it was.” The Conference Committee approved $661 million to pay for the damages done by the devastating fire. Included in that is an initial estimate of $500 million for claims by those who lost their homes and businesses where hurt by the fire. The bill also includes $138 million in fire recovery funds for the Los Alamos National Laboratory and $9 million for Indian tribes. In providing the $500 million, the appropriators accepted the Cerro Grande Fire Assistance Act (S.2736), introduced last week with the support of the entire New Mexico congressional delegation. This legislation authorizes the use of the initial funding to begin a “fair, comprehensive and efficient” process for compensating victims of the Cerro Grande Fire.
