Wilson Hails Approval of Funding for Spanish Library Project June 22, 2000

House Approves Wilson’s Request for $14 Million to Continue Funding Cooperative Program that Will Create an Online Library of Spanish American Records

WASHINGTON, DC –Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s request to provide $14 million to continue the Library of Congress’ Digital Futures project was approved by the House earlier today. Included in the Digital Futures project is a collaborative effort between the Library of Congress and the Biblioteca Colombina in Seville, Spain, and the National Library of Spain to create an electronic library of historical collections that illustrate the common history of Spain and the United States in North America.

“New Mexicans are proud to be among the most culturally and ethnically diverse of the 50 states. Spanish influence permeates our state,” said Wilson. “The intent of the project is to make available to the world historical documents now limited to scholars in Spain. The Spanish settlers were meticulous record-keepers, which should allow this web site to reveal specifics on the earliest days of New Mexico and the United States. I will continue to work with Senators Domenici and Bingaman to ensure that this funding remains in the bill as it moves through the legislative process.”

The project is expected to begin later this year. The “virtual library,” which will be available on the Internet, will include unique historical materials such as maps, rare books, engravings and other materials from 1492 to 1821 examining the frontier history of the two countries.
