A High-Tech Clubhouse… June 18, 2002

By Robert Bartlett
Robert will be a sophomore this fall at Valley High School and is serving a Summer internship in Heather Wilson’s office.
New Mexicans should consider becoming mentors and offering their knowledge of the world, business, and technology to our youth. Mentors not only help kids stay — or even step off — the wrong track, but they also help kids develop real-world business skills.

One program that somebody interested in becoming a mentor should explore is the "YDI/Intel Computer Clubhouse." The computer clubhouse is a model after-school learning environment, where young people explore their own interests and become confident learners, through the use of technology.

At the club house young people have complete access to high-end computer software to help them create projects, gain self-confidence, and find their niche.

And you, as a mentor, help make it all happen.

The Network’s Guiding Principals Are Easy:
  • Support learning through design experiments
  • Help youth build on their own interests
  • Create an environment of respect and trust
  • Offer resources and opportunities to those with limited access to technology
  • Create a learning environment where young people develop technological fluency

  • "Call
or e-mail Frank Mirabal (505) 352-3432 for more information about how you can mentor. If you`re not able to mentor just now, there are other ways the Clubhouse can use your help. Call or e-mail Frank for more information.
    What Are the Qualifications?
A Clubhouse mentor is anyone with a genuine interest in working with young people from under-served areas. Mentors, like our members, are diverse in age, background, interests, and technological experience. Current mentors include students, artists, educators, graphic designers, software developers, and parents, mentors are generally asked to do the following:
  • Work with clubhouse members, creating and inspiring fun projects
  • Orient and welcome new members
  • Offer specific guidance in areas of expertise
  • Provide general help
  • Support members in thinking about college/career opportunities
