Child Abuse Prevention Month April 17, 2001

“New Mexico is a wonderful place to raise a family…but sometimes life can be hard and being a mom or a dad can be difficult. Our children should never have to pay the price.”
Congresswoman Heather Wilson

April is Child Abuse Prevention month. New Mexicans can take certain steps to contribute in the prevention of child abuse. Meeting the needs of abused and neglected children takes more than good intentions… it takes action, money, time and talent. Here are some things you can do.

  • REPORT: If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, call the New Mexico toll free hotline at (800) 797-3260. Reporting suspected abuse is a state law, but your identity may remain anonymous.

  • EDUCATE: When your civic or social association needs a guest speaker, All Faiths Receiving Home will send someone to your meeting to speak about abuse issues. Call 271-0329 in advance to make arrangements.

  • VOLUNTEER: You can help at All Faiths with recreational outings, tutoring programs, clean up projects, clerical services, special events, etc. Call 271-0329.

  • DONATE: Children always need items of new or gently used clothing; toiletries and hygiene products; books, nonviolent games and toys; sports equipment, bath towels and bed linens; guest passes for movies, swimming skating, the zoo, etc. Gift certificates are especially helpful for shopping for special needs. Call the above phone number.

  • CONTRIBUTE: Give an outright gift of cash, stock or other appreciated personal assets. Donate to All Faiths through your workplace United Way campaign.

  • PLAN: Consider leaving a legacy by making a deferred gift such as a charitable trust or annuity or bequest in your will. The legal beneficiary for planned gifts is the All Faiths Receiving Home Foundation, Inc. The number again is 271-0329.

  • WEAR A BLUE RIBBON: A blue ribbon is the symbol for child abuse prevention, so please wear one on your shirt or jacket during the month of April to show you support for the cause.

If you need help, if you just want some information about preventing child abuse, or about parenting or anger management classes, call 271-0329.
