Wilson Votes to Strengthen National Security September 24, 2003

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today voted to strengthen national security and secured $20 million in funding for eight Defense projects in New Mexico. The New Mexico projects, primarily under development by the U.S. Air Force, are included in the 2004 Defense Appropriations Bill which passed the House today. The bill contains $368 billion in new appropriations, which continues funding for bases in New Mexico. “New Mexico is at the forefront of the next generation of defense technology,” Wilson said. “Continued advancement ensures that our dedicated service men and women will have the best tools available.” The 2004 Defense Appropriations is an increase of $3.8 billion over 2003, and is $3.5 billion less than the administration’s request. “Fighting the sustained War on Terrorism requires an equipped, complete fighting force,” Wilson added. “This appropriation takes important strides, including a $97 million increase for Special Operations.” Wilson serves on the House Armed Services Committee that has jurisdiction over military and national security issues. New funding for military projects in New Mexico includes: • $2.5 million for the Air Force’s Aerospace Relay Mirror System to extend capabilities of high-energy lasers for use in missile-interception technology. • $3.5 million for development of boron energy cells for spacecraft power to lighten spacecraft by providing a higher-capability energy source. • $1 million for Air Force Theater Aerospace Command and Control Simulation Facility. • $1 million for Air Force information technology, communications infrastructure and training. • $2.3 million to the Air Force for affordable multi-junction solar cells and solar arrays, some of which are located in New Mexico. • $1 million for Defense for Global Reconnaissance Airborne Chemical Inspection. • $2.5 million to the Air Force for High Power, Advanced Low Mass Space Power System. • $6M for the Air Force’s Point of Maintenance program.
