Wilson-Buyer Increase Opportunities for Minority Students June 28, 2007

Amendment Strengthens Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges

Washington, DC – An amendment by Reps. Heather Wilson (R-NM) and Steve Buyer (R-IN) to increase opportunities for minority students today was passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on which they serve.

The amendment increased the authorization for funding from $35 million to $50 million and expanded access to the funds to all Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), and tribal colleges. The program would establish research grants for up to 10 minority serving institutions on a competitive basis to have the opportunity to conduct research as part of recently announced DOE centers for bio-fuels.

“We need to open the doors of higher education for more minority students so that they are prepared for the jobs of the 21st Century,” Wilson said. “Our fine Hispanic Serving Institutions should be encouraged and supported.”

“Ms. Wilson is a strong advocate for Hispanic and Tribal serving institutions of higher learning. She fought hard and presented persuasive arguments to have Hispanic and Tribal serving institutions participate with Historically Black Colleges to collaborate with the Department of Energy's recently awarded three Bioengineering Research Centers,” Buyer said.
