Wilson Votes to Level Playing Field for Signmakers September 14, 2006

House Passes Bill Improving Fairness for Torrance County Employer
Washington – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today supported H.R. 2965, which passed the House 362-57 with bipartisan support, and said the legislation levels the playing field for a small business in Torrance County. Under the Federal Prison Industries Competition in Contracting Act of 2006 passed today, Federal Prison Industries must compete with private businesses like P&M; Signs in New Mexico for contracts. P & M Signs is a small business that is concerned with lost income because of noncompetitive contracts to Federal Prison Industries. “Decisions made in Washington affect people where they live and work,” Wilson said. “Government can’t create wealth. But government can create the conditions for people to invest and create jobs. Small businesses like P&M; Signs drive our economy and create seven of every 10 new jobs.” The economy has now created jobs for 36 straight months since August of 2003, and unemployment is lower than the average of the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.
