Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson is determined that a new national cemetery for New Mexico veterans will be established as the Santa Fe cemetery reaches capacity.
Today, Wilson released a letter to VA Secretary Anthony J. Principi that seeks to clear up misunderstandings about New Mexico’s prospects for a national cemetery. Public law establishes that 90 percent of veterans should live within 75 miles of a national or state veterans cemetery.
“Congress authorizes the construction of national cemeteries, with the approval of the President,” Wilson states. “The VA may advise on priorities, but the current 170,000 guideline is not consistent with public law and does not constrain Congress in any way.”
According to the VA’s Future Burial Needs Report of June 16, 2003, New Mexico will be in need of a new national cemetery by 2015.
“I want to work with the VA to ensure that this happens and reassure my constituents that the VA recognizes this need and obligation,” Wilson’s letter continues.
Much of the necessary planning for a new national cemetery in New Mexico is already underway. Wilson secured $125,000 in Fiscal Year 2002 Appropriations for a VA study of sites in North Central New Mexico. In February 2003, the VA completed the initial survey of 20 potential sites and identified three that are best suited for the needs.
Wilson has been laying the groundwork for a veterans cemetery in New Mexico since she was elected in 1998. Veterans groups have long pushed for a national cemetery in central New Mexico, and veterans leaders have worked closely with Wilson, the first female veteran to serve in Congress, to establish it.
