Statement by Congresswoman Heather Wilson Concerning visit of North Korean Representative to New Mexico January 09, 2003

“It is my understanding that the North Korean Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Han Song Ryol, asked to travel to New Mexico to visit Governor Richardson.

“Governor Richardson did the right thing to call the Department of State to inform them of that request. Under our agreements with North Korea, the State Department must grant permission for Han to travel outside New York. The State Department had no reason to object to Han’s request.

“The visit is between Governor Richardson and Ambassador Han. I understand that Governor Richardson has not been asked to convey any message to the North Koreans.

“I am concerned that the North Koreans comply with their international obligations and cease development of nuclear weapons.

“The Bush administration has said that they want a dialogue with the North Koreans on how they can live up to their international obligations.
