Wilson: Final Budget Deal Includes $1.176 Million for Math & Science Teacher Training Academy at UNM December 15, 2000

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Heather Wilson was pleased to announce today that the final budget agreement passed by the House includes her request for $1.176 million to fund an expanded math & science teacher training academy at the University of New Mexico. “The math and science teacher training academy at UNM will fill a tremendous need for our community,” said Wilson. “Increasingly, the best jobs in New Mexico will be in scientific, engineering and other high tech fields. In order to ensure that children in our public schools have a high quality math and science background to compete we must have well trained math and science teachers. This expanded math and science teacher training academy will help marshal the states tremendous scientific, mathematical and technological resources to ensure our children get a high quality education.” New Mexico far exceeds national averages in the percentages of high school math and science classes taught by teachers without at least a college minor in the field. This federal funding will allow UNM to expand their current Mathematics and Science Teacher Training Academy for Professional Development that was establish in cooperation with the Lockheed-Martin Corporation. The academy provides teachers with training in integrating math and science instruction into thematic units at the elementary level using strategies appropriate for culturally diverse learners.
