Praises VITA Volunteers at Barelas Community Center Tax Prep Site
Albuquerque, NM – Tax preparation can be complicated and costly, but there is free tax preparation help and advice to those who need it most.
Congresswoman Heather Wilson today joined volunteers at the Barelas Community Center and praised their efforts.
“This is a great community service. Tax preparation can be a burden for a lot of New Mexicans,” Wilson said. “Thank you to each volunteer. I encourage anyone who needs help to come by and talk to one of them. Getting your taxes filed right is worth a few minutes of your time.”
Wilson toured the site, talked to volunteers and pitched in to help fill out forms. Last year, VITA completed forms for over 3,500 residents. In addition to the Barelas Community Center, VITA helps out with tax forms at Santa Ana Pueblo and Lon Lunas YDI Center on Main Street.
VITA volunteers help out on a first-come, first-served basis from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday –Saturday. The city of Albuquerque funds one employee to organize the effort, and the rest of the services are provided by volunteers.
The Neighborhood VITA Coalition is in its fourth year, and has helped secure more than $1 million in refunds. The cooperative effort includes the Department of Labor, neighborhood volunteer associations and both federal and state tax officials.
