Wilson Calls for Auto Safety Provisions July 18, 2005

Congresswoman Urges Improvements to Highway Bill
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson is urging conferees negotiating the final Highway Bill to adopt Senate-backed auto-safety provisions. The Transportation Equity Act has been passed by both the House and Senate and negotiators are working on a conference agreement. In a letter to the members of the Conference Committee, Wilson and a group of bipartisan House members are urging adoption of the safety measures. “Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of preventable death for all Americans aged 2 to 33,” the letter states. The letter notes that preliminary estimates show 42,800 traffic deaths occurred in 2004, an increase over 2003, and 3 million injuries at a cost of $230 billion. “The human and financial toll of losses to American families across the country is unacceptable,” the letter continues. Provisions include establishing improved safety standards:
  • Vehicle rollover prevention
  • Side impact crash protection
  • Occupant ejection prevention
  • Roof crush prevention
  • 15-passenger van safety
  • Child safety
  • Improved data collection
  • Better consumer information
