Wilson Highlights Congressional Art Competition Winners April 25, 2005

Best of Show Will Be On Display at U.S. Capitol

Albuquerque – In a ceremony today, Congresswoman Heather Wilson congratulated the winners of An Artistic Discovery 2005, the congressional art competition.

Sixty students joined the 24th annual competition, representing Rio Grande High School, Cibola High School, La Cueva High School, Stronghurst Alternative School, Bosque School, Hope Christian School, Albuquerque Academy, Los Puentes Charter School, New Futures School, Freedom High School, Sandia Preparatory School, Eldorado High School and Southwest Secondary Learning Center.

“We enjoy the work of all these aspiring artists,” Wilson said. “This is a great opportunity for New Mexico’s youth to show off their talents.”

Mary Ann Weems serves as the Chairperson for the competition, and along with Pat Treadwell and Jeanine Bisetti, selected Best of Show as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and other award-winning pieces.

This year’s Best of Show went to Duncan MacIvor from Hope Christian School/Cooper Art Studio for Roadrunner at Rest. His work will be displayed in a corridor leading from Wilson’s House office to the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Southwest Airlines is recognizing the Best of Show with three roundtrip tickets to the awards ceremony in DC. Sandia Federal Credit Union is awarding a $200 savings bond to Best of Show. BGK Management provided use of the facility for today’s reception.

First, second, and third place will be displayed in Wilson’s Albuquerque office. These awards were earned respectively by Rachel Tepper from Bosque School for Thanksgiving; Nick Lucero from Rio Grande High School for In Memory of…The Marley; Meaghan O’Neill from Bosque School for Paradise. Sandia Federal Credit Union is awarding $100 savings bonds to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Mary Ann Weems will also choose a favorite for the Weems award and present a $100 gift certificate to Weems Gallery to frame their artwork. The people’s choice certificate of recognition, voted on by observers, was earned by Mikaella Gonzales from the Southwest Secondary Learning Center for Native Heart.

“The creative energies of New Mexico’s students are boundless, and I am delighted to have this opportunity to recognize and encourage their talent,” Wilson said.

Wilson believes that art and music are important aspects of a balanced education, not afterthoughts, and today announced that she is sponsoring a bill to fund more art and music in schools.
