Wilson Urges Education & Veterans Funds in Final Appropriations November 19, 2003

Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today called for an additional $1.2 billion for education and $1.3 billion for veterans medical care. In a letter to House and Senate Appropriations chairmen, Wilson urged that important funding for veterans medical care and education be added to the final appropriations bills. The Labor HHS and VA-HUD bills are currently under consideration for FY04. Wilson today urged Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Bill Young, chairmen of the respective appropriations committees, to increase funding for No Child Left Behind by $1.2 billion and veterans health care by $1.3 billion. “No Child Left Behind is landmark legislation that is important to improving education. In New Mexico, I have seen numerous examples of improvements being made as a result,” Wilson said. “I felt compelled to vote against the Labor HHS appropriations bill in the House because it didn’t include enough spending on education.” Wilson said that spending discipline is important but that commitments need to be met in these two areas. A strong economy is the best way to balanced budgets. “Because of the low funding levels for Veterans health included in the House VA-HUD appropriations bill, I could not support it,” Wilson said. “I felt that the House version of this bill didn’t meet the commitments that were made when we completed the Budget act this year.” - END -
