Albuquerque Gets $1.5 Million to Boost Tech-Based Business Development and Job Growth December 11, 2002

Wilson and Bush Admin. Official Announce Federal Funding
Albuquerque, NM - U.S. Commerce Assistant Secretary David Sampson and Congresswoman Heather Wilson today in Albuquerque presented a $1.5 million economic development check to the city of Albuquerque, N.M. The investment will give the Double Eagle II Airport fiber optic capabilities to attract high-tech companies and jobs to Albuquerque. “This is a solid step forward in creating an environment on Albuquerque’s west side that is favorable to job creation and growth,” says Wilson. “Government can’t create jobs, but it can set the stage for investment and innovation, and I think that’s what we’re seeing happen through the work of the Bush Administration and city leaders, in partnership with New Mexico’s congressional delegation.” “The Department of Commerce is pleased to partner with the people of New Mexico. This investment is a great example of Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s commitment to help the Bush Administration empower local communities with the necessary tools to grow their economy, attract investments and create jobs in New Mexico,” said Sampson. Wilson is working in Congress to secure further funding for infrastructure improvements at Double Eagle II Airport. “This EDA award is a true investment in Albuquerque`s economic future, as well as a big boost to the overall economic health of the state. These funds will also allow us to attract more private capital to ensure that viable companies like Eclipse Aviation become a reality in New Mexico,” says Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments Lawrence Rael. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) funded the grant. EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. EDA partners with states, units of local government and community nonprofit organizations in economically distressed areas, regions and communities in order to alleviate conditions of poverty and substantial and persistent unemployment and underemployment. -END-
