Wilson Announces $8.3 Million Awarded to New Mexico for Early Reading Programs September 16, 2002

Funds will help New Mexico’s children achieve greater scholastic success
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that New Mexico has been awarded $8.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education for early reading programs. The funding, authorized under the Reading First program, will help schools improve student achievement in reading and ensure that all children can read at grade level by the end of third grade. “A major indicator of a child’s success is his or her third grade reading score,” said Wilson. “By focusing our efforts on early childhood education, we give all children the tools they need to achieve future success in school and beyond.” The majority of the funding will be used by the state to make subgrant awards to approximately 30 eligible districts. These funds will allow the schools to implement research-based reading programs for students in kindergarten through third grade and to provide professional development to ensure that all teachers have the skills they need to teach these programs effectively. The program will also use instructional assessments so that teachers can effectively screen and identify any reading barriers facing their students and monitor their progress. As part of the state’s professional development plan, New Mexico will build a cadre of highly skilled reading experts to work directly with classroom teachers. The state will hold Reading Leadership Summits to increase the knowledge and understanding of classroom teachers and coordinate state and local efforts to improve reading instruction. --END--
