Wilson Welcomes Improved Title 1 Federal Funding for Albuquerque Schools March 16, 2006

Congresswoman Focused on Strengthening Investment to Good Schools

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today welcomed an increase of nearly $3 million in Title 1 federal funding for Albuquerque Public Schools for the 2006-2007 school year.

“Title 1 funding puts help right where it’s most needed,” Wilson said. “We need a great school in every neighborhood.”

“Providing the best possible education is the foundation of a long term strategy to keep jobs here and help our next generation compete in a global economy,” Wilson said.

Title 1 funding for Albuquerque Public Schools rises this year from $24.7 million to $27.7 million, an increase of nearly $3 million ($2,995,888).

Title 1 provides assistance to school districts to improve the learning opportunities of children at-risk of not meeting challenging academic standards, particularly schools serving more children from lower-income families.

The money, appropriated by Congress through the Department of Education’s Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2006, includes grants to school districts.

Wilson continues to fight for more federal investment in New Mexico’s schools. She voted against the Labor-HHS Appropriations Bill (H.R. 3010) on December 14, 2005 which passed the House by a vote of 215-213, because she was not satisfied with education funding levels.

In 2003, for similar reasons, Wilson also voted against the Labor-HHS bill in the 108th Congress after urging the Appropriations Chairmen, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Bill Young, to beef up education funding with another $1.2 billion for No Child Left Behind provisions.

“We’ve made important strides in federal support for our schools, but we need to continue to invest in our children’s futures,” Wilson said.

Other Highlights for Central New Mexico Schools:

  • Bernalillo Public Schools, an increase of $374,042
  • Los Lunas Public Schools, an increase of $220,472
  • Moriarty Public Schools, an increase of $96,510
  • Rio Rancho Public Schools, an increase of $256,212
  • Belen Consolidated Schools, an increase of $23,600
