Indian Health Care June 08, 2007

Dear Friends,

Thursday was one of those busy days when you feel like you are playing laser tag at Hinkle Family Fun Center.

We were analyzing the impact of an unprecedented $650-million-dollar budget cut at Los Alamos and Sandia, pushing the Homeland Security Department to go ahead with a decision to suspend the requirement to have a passport until they process the backlog over at State, sending a letter to the President on an intensified diplomatic process in Iraq and trying to get the VA together with the City of Santa Fe to transfer land to expand the National Cemetary.

I like busy days. But in the midst of the movement, we were doing something important for Indian Country. And there is a difference between the urgent and the important.

We had a hearing today on the Health subcommittee I serve on about the Indian Healthcare Improvement Act. Ken Lucero from Zia Pueblo testified and he did a great job. His Dad, former Governor Gilbert Lucero came too.

I have gotten to know Ken over the years as I`ve worked on Indian health issues. He is one of those quiet people who has important things to say. He`s worth listening to.

I feel more confident than ever that we will get a bill on Indian Healthcare through the House this year.

In the midst of the commotion of a busy day, Ken`s quiet wisdom came through loud and clear.

Wish you were here,

You can read Ken Lucero`s testimony here.

You can hear the entire hearing, including Ken`s testimony, here. You`ll need Windows Media Player for this file to work.
