Lawmaker Earmarked $3 Million for New Road
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today said that the new Mesa del Sol road is vital to the economic growth planned for the development’s future.
“Developing here has great potential, but this new road makes it practical,” Wilson said. “To grow, a development needs access.”
Wilson today viewed the site of the Mesa del Sol road project in a “windshield tour” and received a progress report from site planners. Wilson has earmarked $3 million for the I-25 interchange in a bill that has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Last year, Wilson secured $1.5 million in appropriations for the University Boulevard extension.
Planning for Mesa del Sol includes potentially thousands of jobs and homes in the coming decades. In addition to the regional recreation center, small businesses will be encouraged to locate at Mesa del Sol. Small businesses create eight of every 10 new jobs in America, Wilson says.
“Government doesn’t create the wealth that builds a community, but it can help create the conditions for growth. In this case that means transportation infrastructure that will support growth,” Wilson continued.
Wilson included a $3 million earmark for the project in the six-year Transportation Authorization which passed the House April 2. The legislation’s next step is the House-Senate conference.
The $3 million in federal funding is for planning and design for the proposed interchange about 3.5 miles south of the Rio Bravo/I-25 Interchange. It will increase access to the new development project.
