Wilson Votes No on Funding Bill July 17, 2003

NM Lawmaker Unhappy with Education Funding Levels
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Wilson voted yesterday against HR 2660, the Labor HHS Appropriations bill, because of her concern that the bill undercuts education funding. Wilson was particularly displeased with the funding level set for Title I funding. "I could not support this funding bill in its current form because it doesn`t meet our obligations in education funding. This bill undercuts Title I spending, which New Mexico relies on. I was compelled to vote against this bill because it doesn`t help New Mexico," says Wilson of her decision. "I hope changes can be made in conference to ensure it meets the needs of our children and their families." Specific items that troubled Wilson:
  • Decreases the $1 billion budget increase in Title I spending to $667 million. New Mexico depends on Title I dollars to improve opportunities for our low-income children;
  • Under funds the IDEA reauthorization bill recently passed by the House that authorized a $2.2 billion increase for FY04. The budget included a similar increase. This bill provides only a $1 billion increase and raises the funding to 19%;
  • Includes $465 million less for the Pell Grant program than what was included in the President`s request.
  • -END-
