| Organization will use funds to create opportunities for New Mexicans with developmental disabilities
Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that The Arc of New Mexico, advocates for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families since 1955, has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Developmental Disabilities. The funding will allow The Arc to create inclusive recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities in four New Mexico communities - Anthony, Socorro, Roswell and Farmington.
“The Arc of New Mexico has provided an invaluable service to individuals and families for nearly half a century,” said Wilson. “This grant will serve to further its mission to help those with developmental disabilities achieve their goals.”
Rebecca Shuman, Executive Director of The Arc, said, “This grant will help us develop the kind of guide book communities need to fully include individuals with developmental disabilities in the life of the community.”
Each community will form a coalition that includes individuals with developmental disabilities, family members and representatives of non-disability specific organizations. Individuals with disabilities will serve as community research associates seeking out the obstacles to inclusion in their communities and helping the coalitions find solutions that enhance accessibility.
