Wilson Votes to Ban Soft Money Donations February 13, 2002

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today voted in favor of legislation that would put an end to all soft money in federal elections. The measure would ban the use of soft money donations by companies, unions or individuals to political parties or other organizations to influence federal elections. It would also bar corporations and labor unions from using unregulated donations to engage in political activity or mass communication in a federal election.

“This is the only legislation we will vote on that bans soft money and is not full of loopholes,” said Wilson.

Soft money is money donated directly to political parties or organizations, not to individual candidates. There are currently no limits to the amount that can be donated to parties or organizations. Individual campaigns cannot accept soft money.
