UNM, TVI, and SIPI Receive $190,000 in grants for Student Support Services Program May 15, 2001

Grants help fund support services to low-income, first generation or disabled college students

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson is pleased to announce that the University of New Mexico—Albuquerque and Valencia Campuses, the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute have each received a $190,000 grant for the Student Support Services program.

The Department of Education’s Student Support Services (SSS) program provides grants to institutions of higher education for projects offering support services to low-income, first generation or disabled college students. SSS projects provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements and serve to motivate students toward the successful completion of their post-secondary education. Project funded under the SSS program may include:

* instruction in basic skills;
* tutorial services;
* academic, financial or personal counseling;
* assistance in securing admission and financial aid for enrollment in graduate and professional programs;
* information about career options;
* mentoring; and
* special services for students with limited English proficiency.

“I am very pleased that these outstanding institutions were chosen to receive this important grant funding,” said Wilson. “It is critical that we give students the support and guidance they need to not only enter college, but to flourish once they are there.”
