Federal Agencies Hosting Job Fair on Saturday, January 6, 2001
Wilson supported funding for additional firefighters

Albuquerque, NM — In response to the severe fire season of 2000 and a recent funding bill passed by Congress, the USDA Forest Service and other federal agencies will hire approximately 3,500 employees nationwide in fire fighting positions over the next several months. At least 300 of those jobs are slated for New Mexico.

The funding for this additional fire protection comes from the Interior Appropriations Funding bill that passed the House of Representatives, with Congresswoman Wilson’s support, on October 3, 2000. That funding bill was signed into public law by the President on October 11, 2000.

The Forest Service’s Southwestern Regional Office, based in Albuquerque, recently announced that an Open House/Job Fair will be held in Albuquerque on January 6, 2001 from 11:00am to 7:00pm at the Old Town Sheraton Hotel. The Forest Service hopes to have computer terminals available so that interested applicants can apply for jobs on-line. Employment and fire experts will be on hand to answer questions and help complete applications.

The deadline for the first round of applications is January 19, 2001. Selections for those positions will begin in February.
Wages range from $7.47 per hour to $15.52 per hour, with opportunities to earn overtime as well. Strength and agility are required for many of these positions, which frequently require long hours of arduous work in steep mountainous terrain.

More information about these positions can be found on the Forest Service Website.
