Wilson Supports Headstart Reauthorization May 02, 2007

Wilson Backs School Funding & Emphasizes Teaching Kids to Learn Early

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today supported legislation reauthorizing the successful Headstart program that gets thousands of New Mexico children off to a better start in school.

The Improving Head Start Act of 2007, H.R. 1429, passed the House 365-48. It reauthorizes the children’s education program that serves over 1 million U.S. children. A study has indicated that every dollar invested in children’s education yields nearly nine dollars saved in the future by better earnings, welfares savings and other factors.

“Teaching children early that they can learn and succeed in school yields lifelong results,” Wilson said. “We need a good public school in every neighborhood to prepare our children for the jobs of the 21st Century. That’s why we are investing more in education than at any time in our history.”

Head Start provides comprehensive education programs, and essential health and dental services to children and families that might not otherwise receive them. Studies show that Head Start children are better prepared to learn and have higher self-esteem and social behavior at school entry.

“I support Headstart,” Wilson continued. “It’s been a success and helps get thousands of our kids off to a better start.”

In March, Wilson urged increased funding for the program. She has supported increased funds for New Mexico schools, more teacher training, high standards and accountability for results. She has also worked for reading programs, more opportunities in math and science education, and for better access to arts and music.
