Remembering World War II Veterans May 09, 2000

D-Day. That word resonates with any American familiar with this decisive battle that foreshadowed the end of Hitler’s dream of Nazi domination. But the word is deafening to those who lived it. While we may never erase the memories of the Normandy battlefield or beaches, we can remember the valiant Americans who risked so much. When all was said and done, Allied Forces suffered 9,758 casualties and 6,603 Americans died. Tales of loss and heroism are as countless as the grains of sand on the Normandy coast.

Congresswoman Heather Wilson is seeking World War II veterans who served on French soil during June 6, 1944 through August 31, 1944 to honor them with the “Jubilee Medal of Liberty.” We need your help to find veterans eligible for this honor.

The “ Normandy Medal,” officially known as the “ Jubilee Medal of Liberty,” is a medal to honor and to remember those who fought on the Normandy Beach. This issue is of particular importance to Heather because she served in Europe for five years, making it a point to visit the Normandy battlefield and beach. She firmly believes that it is “a deeply moving experience…for any American to look back at the last generation and what they did to save Europe.”

In order to preserve and appreciate the rights we have in America, we must recognize and honor those who fought for our freedom. Many people gave their time, their blood, and, in too many cases, their lives. This is an opportunity to honor American heroes and to remember the sacrifices made for the preservation of freedom worldwide.

Eligibility requirements for the Normandy “Jubilee Medal of Liberty”

* Must have served in the United States Armed Forces and participated in the Battle of Normandy on any dates during June 6, 1944 through August 31, 1944

* Veterans who served in the Army Air Corps are also eligible

* The only documentation necessary during the application process is a copy of the veterans DD 214 or discharge paperwork indicating service in Normandy

* Our office is setting up an application process, and any interested veteran, or the family of a veteran, may apply.

* This award may be given posthumously
