Wilson: Reading to Children Yields Lifelong Rewards March 01, 2004

Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today read to first-grade children at Los Lunas Elementary School as part of “Read Across America” Day.

This year, the NEA’s seventh annual Read Across America Day coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday (March 2) 100 years ago – the “Seussentennial.”

“The lifelong benefits of reading to children are well-documented,” Wilson said. “New Mexico’s future will be as bright as the education we provide today to our leaders of tomorrow.”

“I’m proud that in the five years from 1998 to 2003 the federal commitment to good schools in New Mexico has nearly doubled from $288 million to $494 million,” Wilson said. “I’ll continue working for improved teacher training opportunities in math, science and reading.”
