Wrapping-up the 106th Congress December 21, 2000

Dear Friends, I have always liked seeing that Christmas Tree on top of Saint Joseph`s Hospital on Central. A nice reminder as you glance from I-25 of the joy of the season. There`s even more reason to be joyous this year. On Friday the Congress passed our last bill of the year. It was a whopper -- about 18 inches thick -- and wrapped together several bills that are important to New Mexico. First and foremost was a $37 billion over 6 years fix to Medicare. A significant part of that will reduce the discrimination against a handful of states including New Mexico that had reimbursement rates under Medicare Choice that were half what other states had and below costs. I expect the President to sign the bill and now we are hussling with the Health Care beauraucrats to make sure that they implement it properly and asking New Mexico`s health plans to reconsider their plans to curtail service on January 1. We`re trying something new on our website. You can see video of the news report on Medicare Choice by clicking on this link. There were three other projects that we have been working on for some time that were included in the bill. We`re expanding the math and science teachers academy at UNM and establishing a national center for emerging and infectious diseases based on the hanta virus work also at UNM. The bill also included a pilot project for getting private sector financing to charter schools. We`ll work to get one of the pilots here in Rocky Mountain region. The 106th Congress has adjourned, and I want to thank all of you for allowing me to serve. We`ve gotten some important things done -- the Baca ranch purchase, the Los Alamos fire compensation, a partial fix to Medicare for New Mexicans, funding to help extend north and south valley sewers, good budgets for Sandia and Los Alamos to continue their important work, significant changes to active duty and retired military benefits to improve retention and keep promises, a major project to restore the Rio Grande from Cochiti to Elephant Butte, a start on improving teacher training and removing barriers to charter schools. But I`ve got a "to do" list longer than my refrigerator door. I`ll be back at it in January! I`ll be taking next week off to enjoy the holiday with family. Blessings of the season to you and yours. Glad to be home, Heather
