Wilson Welcomes Economic Strength & New Jobs December 03, 2004

Congratulates Hispano Chamber of Commerce at Groundbreaking
Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today welcomed the economic strength that built on October’s job surge by creating another 112,000 jobs last month. Speaking today at a groundbreaking for an expansion of the Barelas Job Opportunity Center, Wilson congratulated the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and said job training is a key component of growth in good jobs and keeping New Mexicans in the state. Wilson has strongly supported the Center, and Congress appropriated $490,000 for the effort in the 2002 VA-HUD Appropriations. At Wilson’s request, Congress passed another $250,000 this year for the expansion. The Center will include job training and computer access to strengthen the Chamber’s efforts to help people find jobs and enhance their skills. “A prepared workforce helps attract more good jobs to New Mexico,” Wilson said. Coupled with October’s surge of 337,000 jobs, the nation has seen growth of 2.4 million jobs since August 2003 over a 15-month stretch of job creation. “America’s economy is strong and growing and that means more and better job opportunities so families can improve their lives,” Wilson said. “An expanding job market has created jobs for 15 straight months and working Americans will be better off because of it.” Unemployment dipped to 5.4 percent, down from a peak of 6.3 percent in June 2003. Wilson regularly tours area businesses to meet with employees and small business owners to have firsthand information about the growth outlook in New Mexico. Wilson supported legislation, signed into law October 4, which extended tax relief for 540,000 working New Mexicans, a child credit for 160,000 New Mexico couples and single parents, and a reduced marriage penalty for 185,000 New Mexico families. Wilson believes that we will continue seeing people hired by keeping taxes low and regulations fair for the small businesses that create nearly eight of every 10 new jobs in America.
