Postal Service Taking Steps Forward March 19, 2007

Delivering Results

Congresswoman Heather Wilson toured a key Westside and Rio Rancho postal facility to get a first-hand look at service improvements and to talk to hard-working postal employees. Wilson says postal employees are working hard to address constituent complaints she brought to postal officials over the last year. She also encourages people in New Mexico, particularly on the Westside and Rio Rancho, to let her know about delivery and service problems as the post office focuses on improved service.

"Exactly one year ago, we saw an increase in complaints from New Mexicans about mail delivery. We started working with the post office right away, making sure they understand how important their service is to people."
--Congresswoman Heather Wilson

During her tour of the Pino Station in Paradise Hills, Postal officials told Heather that they have corrected delivery times for a majority of the 45,000 delivery points they have on the Westside and in Rio Rancho.

Heather talks to postal customer Jadon Newman, 11 months, and his family: Dad and mom are Jon and Stacy, and big brother is five-year-old Jonathan.

Heather`s office fielded dozens of complaints about late-night delivery and relayed those complaints to postal officials.

The post office reports that 30% of their postal carriers were returning to the office after 5pm, often as late as 8 or 9pm. Postal officials now report that 99.9% of their carriers are off the street by 5pm.

They say they accomplished this service improvement by getting the mail from the processing plant to the station earlier in the day, translating to carriers getting mail in mailboxes earlier in the day.

We`ll keep watching to ensure that service continues on the right track. But I`m encouraged by what I`ve seen and heard and congratulate the working men and women of the post office for their efforts."
--Congresswoman Heather Wilson
