Heather Wilson New Mexico`s Congresswoman Heather Wilson was first elected to serve the citizens of New Mexico`s First Congressional District in a special election on June 23, 1998. She was re-elected to her second full term on November 7, 2000.
During her first full term in the House, Congresswoman Wilson continued her fight to promote the health and well being of New Mexico’s families. She was a leader in the House effort to save the health care coverage of more than 15,000 seniors in the first district who enroll in Medicare Choice. Thanks to her leadership and determination during the Firestone tire crisis, Wilson was able to secure 6,000 new tires for consumers in New Mexico.

Heather Wilson’s commitment to the people of New Mexico is not limited by district boundaries. When the Cerro Grande fire devastated the community of Los Alamos, she joined with New Mexicans across the state in doing anything and everything she could to help. Additionally, Wilson led the effort in the House to pass legislation to preserve the 95,000 acre Baca ranch for all future generations of New Mexicans.
Congresswoman Wilson continues to serve on the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues important to the 1st District including energy, public health, telecommunications and hazardous materials. Almost half of the legislation that comes to the House for a vote comes through the Energy and Commerce Committee.
For the 107th Congress, Congresswoman Wilson was appointed by the Speaker of the House to serve on the prestigious Armed Services Committee. The influential committee has jurisdiction over military and national security issues including many programs of critical importance to New Mexico, including oversight of personnel and infrastructure issues at Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Lab.
For the 107th Congress, Congresswoman Wilson’s priorities will continue to be:
improving public education for our kids; protecting Social Security and strengthening Medicare with a prescription drug benefit; rebuilding our nation’s defenses while improving the quality of life for our service men and women and meeting the needs of our veterans; and tax relief for working families. Congresswoman Wilson is the first woman since Georgia Lusk in 1948 to serve in Congress from New Mexico. Mrs. Wilson is also the first woman veteran in American history to serve in Congress. Her district is centered in Albuquerque, and includes Bernalillo and Torrance counties and parts of Santa Fe, Sandoval and Valencia counties.
A distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1982, Mrs. Wilson was a Rhodes Scholar and earned her masters and doctoral degrees in international relations from Oxford University in England. As an Air Force officer she worked with our NATO allies and in the United Kingdom. After leaving the Air Force in 1989, she became Director for European Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council staff at the White House. In 1991, Mrs. Wilson founded Keystone International Inc. in Albuquerque to work with senior executives in large American defense and scientific corporations with business development and program planning work in the United States and Russia.
Heather Wilson is married to Jay Hone, an Albuquerque attorney. They have one adult son, Scott Hone, and two younger children, Joshua and Caitlin Hone.
