Wilson Request Nets $6 Million For North/South Valley Sewer Systems October 07, 1999

WASHINGTON -- Because of a request by Congresswoman Heather Wilson, Veteran's Affairs/ Housing and Urban Development appropriation conferees have agreed to include $6 million to improve the South and North Valleys' sewer system. The Senate had recommended $3.1 million for the project. Wilson and Senator Pete Domenici also announced other funding in the bill included, $1 million for the Town of Bernalillo's wastewater treatment, and $1.8 million for the Lovelace Respiratory Research Center. Negotiators from the House and Senate agreed on compromise legislation that would fund the programs. The compromise must now be approved by both bodies of Congress before it can be sent to the President for enactment into law. "Combined with the South Valley flood relief study, the sewers and water treatment plant will help to protect people in the South and North Valleys and in Bernalillo from significant health risks," Wilson said. "The funding for Lovelace will allow it to continue the important health research that has already yielded important new information about respiratory disease and the effects of pollution. These are very important projects for the health and well-being of Albuquerque's citizens." "I commend local leaders for continuing the push to bring more modern water and wastewater infrastructures to the North and South Valley," Domenici said. "This funding shows that the federal government is on board. I hope Congress can soon wrap up its work on this bill and that the President will sign it into law." There are 4,000 homes in the South and North Valleys with leaking septic tanks that are polluting the ground water and creating serious health risks. The $6 million of federal funding that Wilson secured for sewers will add to funding contributed by the City and the State. The Town of Bernalillo is expected to grow by more than 67 percent in the next three years. The $1 million of federal funding for a new wastewater treatment plant will help the Town prepare for the growth. Lovelace is the nation's only research lab the studies the effect of combinations of air pollutants on human health. The $1.8 million appropriated will allow the Center to continue and expand its research. The House and Senate are expected to approve the spending bill next week, when it will be presented to President Clinton for his signature. Wilson originally requested the funding of House appropriators earlier this year and has worked to keep the projects in the bill.
